Workcamp Journal 2006

On June 11 - 17, fifteen members of the Sr. high youth group traveled to Prestonburg, Kentucky for a week of work and service. The participants were Madison Baker; Caleb Easterly; Rachel Easterly; Ian Gaston; Kyle Richardson; Kris Richardson; Ben Koskinen; Adam Beat; Louise Mills-Strauser; TJ Bashore; Todd Dye ; Margaux Foster; Liz Krueger; Shane Millen; & Austin Morris. The chaperones are Paul Board; Michael Becker; Stace Torio; and Ashley Prybelski. They built a roof on a mobile home for LINKS, Low Income Housing Coalition of East KY, Inc.  The mobile home belonged to Minerva and Frank Shell.  There was an addition built onto the home many years ago and there has always been a permanent rain leak between the two structures.  For this reason, a gable roof was needed to cover the two structures.  The Kids started from scratch building trusses for a gable roof sixty-six feet long.  Once the trusses were up, they installed plywood and shingles.  The project took four days and accounted for 41 labor hours per person. We stayed in a home provided by LINKS.  The house was nice, but there was no furniture, except folding chairs, folding tables, and bunk beds.  We prepared our own food.  The accommodations were fine, because the kids were too tired to care.   There were no significant injuries, but many tired muscles.  On the last day, we treated ourselves to a Whitewater rafting trip in West Virginia.  The kids will attest rafting was their favorite part of the trip.  I will attest I have never seen a group of teens work so hard for so long.  I am very proud of them.We wish to thank the Women of St. Paul’s for their general sponsorship.  Funding also came from parents, youth group fundraising activities, St. Paul’s vestry and the Diocese of Ohio. Please look to the photos inside this newsletter.Congratulations to everyone for an incredible job well done!
